Nancledra Children

Geography

At Nancledra School, Geography is a powerful way for children to explore, understand, and appreciate the world around them. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils build their geographical knowledge year by year—developing a strong sense of place, from their immediate surroundings to the wider world.

Our unique location in West Cornwall plays a central role in shaping our curriculum. Surrounded by dramatic coastlines, moorland, mining heritage, and rich biodiversity, Nancledra offers children first‑hand opportunities to investigate both physical and human geography in meaningful, memorable ways. Pupils learn not only from maps and images but from the landscapes, settlements, and environmental issues that form part of their everyday experience.

Through our Geography curriculum, children develop:

  • Accurate locational knowledge, using maps, atlases, globes, and digital tools to understand where places are and how they connect.
  • Understanding of physical processes such as coasts, rivers, weather, erosion, and climate—concepts brought vividly to life through our proximity to the sea and local natural features.
  • Knowledge of human geography, including land use, settlements, trade, and population, explored through local examples as well as national and global case studies.
  • Geographical enquiry skills, including asking questions, gathering evidence, analysing data, and drawing conclusions.
  • Confident use of geographical vocabulary, enabling them to describe and explain the world with clarity and precision.

Our curriculum helps children make meaningful links between local, national, and global geography. They learn how Cornwall’s landscape has influenced its history, economy, and culture, and how environmental issues—such as coastal erosion, sustainability, and climate change—affect our region and the wider world.

At Nancledra, we want children to develop curiosity, respect for the environment, and a sense of responsibility for the planet’s future. By the time they leave us, pupils will have a secure foundation of geographical knowledge and the skills needed to continue exploring and understanding the world in Key Stage 3 and beyond.

Knowledge Organisers
Below are examples of our Knowledge Organisers, which are used in every lesson to support children’s understanding. Pupils refer to them regularly to build subject‑specific vocabulary, make connections between units of learning and identify links across different curriculum areas. These examples show the format and structure our children use to strengthen their knowledge and deepen their learning.
