Modern Foreign Languages

The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, expressing themselves and asking questions with accurate pronunciation and intonation
  • write at varying length for different purposes and audiences, using a range of grammatical structures
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a variety of writing in the language studied

At Nancledra School, we believe that learning a foreign language broadens horizons, deepens cultural understanding, and lays the foundations for future language learning.

Intent

Our intent for MFL is to:

  • deliver a structured and engaging French curriculum that provides all KS2 pupils with strong foundations in conversational language
  • inspire enthusiasm for language learning and prepare pupils for continued study in KS3
  • develop children’s understanding of grapheme–phoneme correspondence, enabling them to decode and pronounce new vocabulary
  • ensure pupils can hold simple conversations in French, appropriate to what they have been taught
  • introduce key French grammatical conventions, including gender and differences in word order (e.g., adjective placement)

We aim for children to leave KS2 as confident, curious language learners who enjoy communicating in another language.
