The National Curriculum for Languages aims to ensure that all pupils:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, expressing themselves and asking questions with accurate pronunciation and intonation
- write at varying length for different purposes and audiences, using a range of grammatical structures
- discover and develop an appreciation of a variety of writing in the language studied
At Nancledra School, we believe that learning a foreign language broadens horizons, deepens cultural understanding, and lays the foundations for future language learning.
Intent
Our intent for MFL is to:
- deliver a structured and engaging French curriculum that provides all pupils with strong foundations in conversational language
- inspire enthusiasm for language learning and prepare pupils for continued study in KS3
- develop children’s understanding of grapheme–phoneme correspondence, enabling them to decode and pronounce new vocabulary
- ensure pupils can hold simple conversations in French, appropriate to what they have been taught
- introduce key French grammatical conventions, including gender and differences in word order (e.g. adjective placement)
At Nancledra School, we use the Language Angels scheme of work from Year 1 through to Year 6 to support the delivery of our MFL curriculum. This provides a fully planned, progressive and curriculum-aligned programme, ensuring continuity and progression across the school.
Language Angels offers ready-to-teach lessons, interactive resources and native-speaker audio, supporting accurate pronunciation and building teacher confidence in delivery.
The scheme is carefully structured to develop the three key pillars of language learning: phonics, vocabulary and grammar, enabling pupils to read, pronounce and understand new language with increasing accuracy.
Pupils build their skills progressively through a sequence of units organised into age-appropriate topics and themes, moving from simple words and phrases to more complex sentence structures and conversation.
Through regular revisiting and consolidation, pupils develop confidence across the four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, ensuring they are able to apply their learning in different contexts and retain knowledge over time.
We aim for children to leave KS2 as confident, curious language learners who enjoy communicating in another language.
